MINSU KIM

 

South Korean bass Minsu Kim, born in 1995, trained at Kyung Hee University in Seoul and earned a diploma from the Accademia Donizetti in 2022. He has also participated in masterclasses with Leo Nucci and Raina Kabaivanska. The winner of first prize at the Cappuccilli Competition, second prize at Valsesia Musica, and a special prize at the Borsò Award, he has performed roles such as Dulcamara (L’elisir d’amore), Basilio (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Bartolo (Le nozze di Figaro), and Giorgio (I puritani).

The program for bass opens with a repertoire of great dramatic weight, exploring characters of strong stature. The first round combines the profound vocalism required by Banco’s aria in Verdi’s Macbeth with the dramatic power of Alvise’s piece in Ponchielli’s La Gioconda, an aria that demands power and authority.

The semifinal ranges from a lesser-known opera to an early Verdi masterpiece. The program includes an aria from Gomes’s Salvator Rosa, where the character of Masaniello, a father and leader of a rebellion, expresses his sorrow. The round concludes with the celebrated scene of Don Ruy Gomez de Silva from Verdi’s Ernani, a showcase for legato and vocal authority that highlights a strong dramatic temperament.
