2) Niccolò Paganini

three Capricci of the candidate’s choice from the 24 Capricci op. 1

 

3) Eugène Ysaÿe

one Sonata of the candidate’s choice from the Six Sonatas for solo violin

 

 

SECOND ROUND (Maximum 50 min.)

with piano

 

The program of the Second round must comprise three pieces: a romantic work, a modern work and a virtuosistic piece.

 

1) The candidate must play one romantic piece chosen from the following:

Johannes Brahms: Sonata No. 1 in G major op. 78

Johannes Brahms: Sonata No. 2 in A major op. 100

Johannes Brahms: Sonata No. 3 in D minor op. 108

César Franck: Sonata in A major

Gabriel Fauré: Sonata No. 2 in E minor op. 108

Edvard Grieg: Sonata No. 3 in C minor op. 45

Robert Schumann: Sonata No. 1 in A minor op. 105

Robert Schumann: Sonata No. 2 in D minor op. 121

Robert Schumann: Sonata No. 3 in A minor WoO 2

 

2) The candidate must play one modern piece chosen from the following:

Claude Debussy: Sonata in G minor L 140

Sergei Prokofiev: Sonata No. 1 in F minor op. 80

Sergei Prokofiev: Sonata No. 2 in D major op. 94a

Richard Strauss: Sonata in E-flat major op. 18

Leoš Janáček: Sonata

Francis Poulenc: Sonata FP119

Olivier Messiaen: Thème et variations

 

3) The candidate must play a virtuosic piece chosen from the following:

Maurice Ravel: Tzigane for violin and piano

Pablo de Sarasate: Carmen Concert Fantasy op. 25

Henri Wieniawski: Originalthema mit Variationen op. 15

Niccolò Paganini: Introduction and variations for solo violin on the theme “Nel cor più non mi sento”

Niccolò Paganini: Introduction and variations on the theme “Di tanti palpiti”

Karol Szymanowski: Myths op. 30

 

 

SEMIFINAL ROUND (Minimum 50 min. – Maximum 55 min.)
with piano

 

A recital program of the candidate’s choice.

 

N.B. Contestants cannot present the same composition more than once during the competition. In all rounds, compositions with more than one tempo must be performed entirely.

 

 

FINAL ROUND with orchestra

 

The candidate must perform a Concerto for violin and orchestra chosen from

Johannes Brahms: Concerto in D major op. 77

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky: Concerto in D major op. 35

Jean Sibelius: Concerto in D minor op. 47

Niccolò Paganini: Concerto No. 1 op. 6

Niccolò Paganini: Concerto No. 2 in B minor op. 7

 

The submitted program may be modified on the page of the online application form no later than 10 September 2024.

The Competition Secretariat, if necessary, may ask candidates for a copy of the score of some of the proposed music.
