SO YEON YANG

 

The South Korean soprano So Yeon Yang, born in Seoul in 1993, studied singing at Yonsei University and earned her Master’s degree at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Rostock, Germany. She has gained stage experience performing roles such as Konstanze (Die Entführung aus dem Serail) at the Opernloft in Hamburg. She was a member of the opera studio at Landestheater Neustrelitz, where she performed roles including Tatjana (Eugen Onegin), Giannetta (L’elisir d’amore), and Rosalinde (Die Fledermaus). She currently lives in Austria and is attending a postgraduate singing course at the Kunstuniversität Graz, under the guidance of Prof. Elena Pankratova.

The first round opens with Puccini’s aria “Un bel dì, vedremo” from Madama Butterfly. This is followed by Richard Wagner’s “O musst du Hoffnung schwinden” from Die Feen, his first opera, a piece of great vocal virtuosity in which the fairy Lora despairs of ever seeing her beloved brother and friends again.

The semifinal continues with Verdi’s aria “Surta è la notte… Ernani! Ernani, involami” from Ernani. The aria is a moment of great dramatic urgency in which the protagonist Elvira anxiously awaits the arrival of her beloved Ernani, her only desire and hope for salvation. The program concludes with Puccini’s “Tu che di gel sei cinta” from Turandot and Leoncavallo’s “Qual fiamma avea nel guardo” from Pagliacci, which combine lyrical introspection and vehement passion.
