YEONJOO KATHARINA JANG

 

The South Korean soprano Yeonjoo Katharina Jang, based in Germany, made her role debut as Gilda in Rigoletto at the Neustrelitz State Theatre in the 2024/25 season. She was a member of the Hamburg State Opera’s young artist program from 2022 to 2024, performing various roles. She studied at Seoul National University and the University of Music Franz Liszt Weimar on a DAAD scholarship. Her accolades include winning first prize at the Piero Boni Competition and second prize at the Anton Rubinstein Competition. She made her European debut in 2020 as Olympia in Les Contes d’Hoffmann.

The first round opens with Adele’s lively aria, “Mein Herr Marquis,” from Johann Strauss II’s Die Fledermaus, a piece that highlights the chambermaid’s cunning. This is followed by Marie’s famous aria, “Chacun le sait,” from Donizetti’s La fille du régiment, a joyful and proud celebration of her military life. The semifinal continues with two arias of great impact and spirit: the first is “Vedrai, carino” by Zerlina from Mozart’s Don Giovanni, a reassuring promise of love. The program concludes with the complex aria of Le Feu, “Arrière! Je réchauffe les bons,” from Ravel’s opera L’enfant et les sortilèges, where the character powerfully expresses its dual nature, capable of warming the good and burning the wicked.
