* * *

The first round begins with Guglielmo’s aria, “Rivolgete a lui lo sguardo,” from Mozart’s Così fan tutte, a piece of great comedic flair and virtuosity in which the character pretends to court the two sisters. This is followed by Rodrigo’s famous farewell, “O Carlo ascolta… Io morrò,” from Verdi’s Don Carlo, a moment of great friendship, heroism, and sacrifice. The semifinal is dedicated to Hamlet’s aria, “Ô vin, dissipe la tristesse,” from Thomas’s opera, a deeply melancholic melody in which the Danish prince seeks comfort in wine to forget his inner torment.
